In PS, i can easily create type that is transparent and add a drop shadow such that just the shadow shows and the type itself is transparent.
How to accomplish this in ID?
When i   X  the color, the shadow goes away, and there doesn't seem to be any way to render the shadow and keep it as a separate element

    Accepted Solution

InDesign requires a fill color for a drop shadow to be applied. If you are trying to go for an effect like letterpress, try making the type the same color as the background. Let me know what you are trying to achieve and I'll see if I can provide an alternative solution.

unfortunately it's not on a solid background.  i was hoping CS5 would have an added feature by now.
    thanks anyway.

You might try playing with the layer blending options to get the effect you're looking for.
