VSS error

We use a 3rd party offsite backup program.  When we have tried to do a system state backup of the server it fails wit hte following message: "A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for
more information. ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x800423f4)

The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.
Failed to generate the backup image of MS Windows System Backup".

In the event view app log we get an error message that i have attached to this question.

Previous research had me attempt to reregoster the .dll files assocaited with VSS.  The OS of the server is Server 2008 R2 64 bit.  I also installed Service Pack 1.  Both times I then rebooted the server and attempted to backup the system state again but kept getting the same errors.

Any other analysis and help is appreciated.

The hot fix that you suggested is for the x86 platform.  As I said we are running R2 in the x64 platform.  The hotfix does not apply.
