Entire network drive suddenly read-only

What would cause my entire network storage to suddenly flag as read only on every file (we're talking over 300,000)? I maintain anti-virus on the server and nothing unusual is in the event logs. Yet there they are - checked read-only. WTF?

1. is this network storage shared among people in a workplace...
2. did you or someone mark the drive as compressed
3. what antivirus?
4. what network storage (simple hdd tray/server via file server)

if 1.
its comman for people to accidently do things on a shared resource, i once lost over 500k files from docs to exls, thank god i had a backup...

if 2.
if a shared resource on a network in a workplace someones PC might have locked the entire shared resource or there PC has some sort of maleware/adware etc etc...

on 3.
not sure what antivirus you running, and im sure im not allowed to mentioned bads things about certain virus scanners here but they can cause havoc sometimes...

on 4.
