Conditional font color change in group header based on detail section

This should be an easy one but those always seem to be the ones that get me...

I would like to change the font color of one of the fields in a group based on a condition of a detail field.  For example - John Doe has an overdue pledge.  His name and summary information is listed in the group header with a drill down to the details of his payment schedule.  He has missed his last two payments and those are listed in red in the details section since they are past due.  I would like to list his name in the group header in red as well so the user can see who is late in payment without having to drill down to see the payment schedule.

I tried to use the conditional formatting options on the fields in the group headers but nothing changes.  Do I need to base the condition on something listed on the same level?

Thank you.

Basically yes.
I gather there may be several detail records showing payment information.

Try this
add a formula to the report
Name - LatePayment
If (PastDueTEst) then
    1
Else
    0

PastDueTest is the test you are using to turn the payment information red.

Use this formula for the conditionally color
If Sum({@LatePayment},{PersonField}) > 0 then
    crRed
Else
    crBlack
