Downloading SINGLE WIM from Single Instance Storage with WIM files

I have about 5 Win 7 SP1 x64 WIM images that i have placed into a single WIM file using the imagex /export command. I assume this is using single instance storage to perform deduplication of files and replace them with links.

My question is how does MDT 2010 (in SCCM) utilize the multiple WIM images inside the single WIM file?

When i deploy an OS through SCCM with MDT2010 i use the "Apply Operating system from a captured image" selection and select the single WIM package file then select the individual WIM image from within the WIM file. However when the OSD begins to deploy the OS it downloads the entire 30GB WIM file rather than just the 7GB WIM image.

The same thing happens when i try to create stand alone media. Instead of the image being ~7GB its 30GB.

Is this by design? If not am i doing something wrong in my deployment?

    Why do you keep 5 images in one WIM file?  That seems a little excessive.  Surely it makes more sense to have 5 seperate images?

    if i have 5 separate images then i get 5 copies of the core installation files. If i use SIS it will de-duplicate core files so i only get one copy dramatically reducing storage space.

    Before i combined my WIM files they were about 50GB with SIS theyre about 20GB.

    Are you saying you end up with 5 partitions with 5 OS installed, or just one OS installed on one partition but its 30GB in size?  Are you partitioning the disk to a 30GB size?  Windows 7 with Aero enabled requires 40GB of space.  

    Or do you mean that you have it caching the files locally first before installing it and its caching the full wim?  It will cache the full wim before extracting the image it needs but I would have thought that this would cache to the temporary partition.

    I mean that its caching the entire 30GB WIM file then extracting the individual WIM image once its been downloaded. I have separated the images back out into individual files to speed up the OS deployments.

    SCCM with USMT 2010 downloads the entire SIS package to the local machine duruing OSD then extracts the single WIM file to install on the local machine.
