Can Not edit Sharepoint 2010 Document Library Files

I have a fresh install of Sharepoint 2010 and I am running Office 2010.  I am running into a problem where all the uploaded documents (docx or xlsx) will only open in read only mode.  If I try to edit in excel I get the following error:

"The document could not be opened for editing. A Microsoft SharePoint Foundation compatible application could not be found to edit the document."

I opened an excel spreadsheet in the browser and it will not let me edit it.  I am the farm administrator as well as the site administrator.  I tried it in Chrome and IE with the same problem.  I also tried it on my mac using Safari and got the same error.  Does anyone have a solution for me to get these documents to be editable.

I had something similar happen, but with an older version of Office. I found this article (Office 2007 based), and it resolved my issue. Might be a good place to start?

No such luck for me.  Everything in the office is installed on my machine.  I am also not able to modify anything on the xlsx file when it is opened in the browser either.
When you're looking at the file itself, do you see a drop-down menu where the file name is displayed? If so, when you click the drop down box, do you see 'Edit in Microsoft....'?
Yes when I see the name I select the drop down and select edit in microsoft excel.  I then get the popup error that is listed in my original post.
Now if I open the document in the browser I can not edit it.  So I selected the button at the top "Open in Excel" and this is the error I received.

I am running Office 2010 Professional and using IE9 (32bit) to browse the sharepoint site.
What exactly is your environment in terms of OS and IE version?
The reason I ask, is that the editing in browser feature utilizes an active x control. A lot of these are unsupported on 64bith version of Windows.
I think I am figuring out the issue.  I want to run it by you to see what you think and if my resolution is correct.  I am running a 64bit version of windows 7 AND 64bit version of office 2010.  I think the 64bit version of office is the issue.  Do I need to install the "2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components" in order for it to work or something along those lines.

I am using the 32bit version of IE so the IE shouldn't be an issue.
My problem is now fixed by installing the 32bit version of Office.  Thank you for your help though.  I will give you the points as you are the only one that responded.
