VM Host

I have a server that I want to use the standalone converter on to make a vm.  I have a new server that has 3 500 gb drives that I want to use a RAID 5 on.  I should have a partition that is just under a terabyte.  Will the converter allow me to convert that machine into the host using the RAID?  The server that needs to be converted has one drive with one 600gb partition on it.

They purchased VM Ware Essentials.  The server that is being converted is Windows 2003 with Exchange 2003.

What Server do you have to host vSphere Essentials?

Make sure it's on the Hardware Compatibility List here

When converting Exchange, convert it with the services stopped. So be prepared to schedule some downtime.

It is on the compatible list but I am not in front of it until tomorrow.  It is an HP DL160..I think...

I was just concerned about the size of the partition (600gb) b/c I thought there was a limit in the conversion process.

Max Limit, 2TB (-512 bytes) is the max virtual disk size, and the maximum vmfs partition datastore size is also 2TB (- 512 bytes).

Thanks.  Is there a specific way that I need to setup to use more than 250?  I remember hearing something a while back about block sizes...

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
• 1MB block size – 256GB maximum file size
• 2MB block size – 512GB maximum file size
• 4MB block size – 1024GB maximum file size
• 8MB block size – 2048GB maximum file size

so when installing your ESX/ESXi server MAKE sure you create a datastore with the correct block size, or you will be sorry later.

How and when do I setup block size?  If I load it from disk it never asked me about the block size or a datastore.

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
when you login to the server using vsphere client, remove the datastore, and reformat it, using the required block size.
