Ways to reduce imap mailbox size

I have many clients on my vps, however many of them are getting very large email inboxes(including myself)
2 of my email accounts have 2gb in each of them.

Using Imap is a great email solution, but surely there has to be a way of deleting some of these off of the server without losing the emails locally.

I keep on getting emails saying that client xx is nearing their quota, and have to keep manually increasing the email box sizes.
And over time it is eating up my resources on my server.

Anyone got any suggestions?

You can set auto-archive in Outlook (if they use that) to automatically move some messages out of the main server storage and into their local data file.

If you set it for a relatively short period of time (monthly), that should work.

If not Outlook, what client are you using?  You can also move messages into a local folder in other clients like Thunderbird.

One other option is to empty deleted items (trash) and sent items from the server at each log-out.

Thanks ajmehta for the response. The one that I personally use is thunderbird, but most of my clients use outlook though.
