Problem With Playing Quicktime Embedded Movies in Internet Explorer

I have a problem with one PC in particular.

Whenever I try to view quicktime (.mov) files that are embedded in webpagegs (using Internet Explorer), they are displayed with a question mark and refuse to play.

I have reinstalled quicktime several times and have also tried Quicktime alternative and I get the same results.

I have played about wiht the file association options within Quicktime and I get the same result.

Very annoying.....

Can anoyon help please?

Hi, I can confirm that all my settings are as above, and I still have the same problem
check the last item on the last screenshot. that one normally is the kicker....

so you've checked all zone settings?

have you checked the add-ons section in IE? anything not right there?
does it work in other browser?
this forum suggests that it might be interfering with flash and things may need to be reset or reinstalled.

I would reset settings as well.
Hi, please have a look below, everything looks correct to me.

have you tried re-installing flash or updating? flash+quicktime updates tend to interfere with eachother.

have you tried the reset button in the IE config options screenshot presented?

You are not the only one with this problem a lot of people have.

here's another suggestion:
control panel>Add/Remove Programs>select> QuickTime> Repair option
Hi,

I just tried installing Firefox and I cannot get the movies to display at all...not even a question mark this time.

If I look in the Firefox Plugins, the Quicktime plug in is there and enabled
might be quicktime then if it's not working in any browser, please try repairing quicktime.
I have tried reinstalling quicktime several times, it does not help.

Also just tried this as suggested:

1.Open Quicktime Player.
2.Click on Edit tab and go to preference.
3.Then click on Quicktime Preference.
4.One that opens click on Advanced tab.
5.You will see a selection for video or direct X.
6.Click on Safe mode (GDI only).
7.Then click on Apply, then OK.
8.Restart Quicktime and play a movie to test.

It did not help
does this do that for all QT videos?

have you tried things like clearing your cache? re-installing flash?
this was resolved using the method presented on this forum http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f131/firefox-show-quick-time-q-symbol-no-picture-resolved-89085.html#post461955

also you may try installing/updating java as well.

Ok, I have just uninstalled Flash and Quicktime and restarted the PC.

I then installed Quicktime and tested the webpage

- it did not work

I then installed Flash and tested the webpage

- it did not work

I then tried clearing my cache, it did not work

Please note that OFFLINE (non embedded) movies work fine!
Java is fine, please note that alot of the links you are giving me are for when embedded flash movies are being hijacked by Quicktime.  The embeeded files are .mov, not flash
have you tried the trailers from apple's site?
This is strange...apple trailers work fine
and any other embedded .mov or .mp4 files? is it just that one not working?
It seems to be just the ones on that page, but the videos that are not working for that PC are working on other pc's (which are the same spec/image etc)
did you try deleting some of the prefs files in one of the links I provided?
Which prefs files?
remove pluginreg.dat from your profile folder. If it still isn't fixed after doing that, remove npqt*.dll from your Firefox plugins folder.
Sorry, i thought those were just FireFox prefs.  Do you know the path to pluginreg.dat?  I cannot find it
oh wait, found it...it is a Firefox file....the problem was there before I even installed Firefox so I dont thin it is that.  That is a firefox specific problem/fix
also I forgot about this:
Have you installed the QuickTime ActiveX control for your IE 8?
is there a specific place I can download this?
thing is should have been installed with quicktime... did it ask you what to install? like "install plugin to these browsers: IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc" when selecting custom install?
is the computer you're trying this on have admin privileges?
Yes it did ask about the plugins...like I have said it works on all other websites so not sure that is the problem.

Yes I do have admin privileges on the computer
OK it looks like it could be the way the site is handling it or your codecs. installing quicktime should have given you the right codecs, and adjusting your browser settings to let those plugins should have worked, deleting prefs files should have reset any bad settings. resetting IE to default settings and checking addons and plugins should have worked as well. re-installing or repairing your quicktime should have worked in most cases.
this could help and I will post one suggestion:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2462432?start=0&tstart=0

1. From the Start menu, click Open.
2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.

Now we'll go hunting.

Go "Start > Computer"
In "Computer" open "Local Disk C:" or whichever drive your operating system is installed on.
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "SysWOW64" folder.

What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file and/or folder name? On a PC with a standard QuickTime install, you should see precisely two QuickTime files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.
We are using 32 bit machines, but in C:\Windows\System32

are QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx

Just as you describe :)
does VLC have web plug-ins? This software plays a tremendous amount of media. If not, you may be able to dl the media and play it with VLC. Great software.

Yeah we have VLC but quicktime is a bit funny with it so want to make sure I just use quicktime
