What web services platform would you recommend for businesses? (besides AWS)

The recent outage at Amazon Web Services has me thinking about secure, redundant cloud-based storage alternatives.

Amazon Web Services provides an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud that small startups to enterprise organizations have trusted because it is scalable, comprehensive and affordable. And yet, the outage that led to sites like Foursquare and Reddit being dark for a full day raises questions of reliability.

I'd like to hear personal recommendations from the Experts Exchange cloud computing gurus...what cloud-based web services alternatives to AWS would you recommend for business and why?

Thanks.

you could consider using a private cloud which is an internal extrernal cloud

http://www.infoworld.com/t/cloud-computing/what-the-private-cloud-really-means-463

I expect the public/privated cloud to be the model for 2014 onwards I expect vmware to play a major part by osing vsphere which is the first cloud operating system a free version of vsphere is available

the cloud is basicall going to be service based not shop based so for instance if your product can be sold as a service like a backend ip database can be a cloud based database as its just an ip address

Amazon still leads the pack :)

Try RackSpace and GoGrid.

Thanks for chiming in, guys!

Ian--

Interesting read on the private cloud. Knorr talks about how "the model of providing commodity services on top of pooled, well-managed virtual resources" can reduce costs, which is what web-based services like AWS also tout. Does the private cloud also improve reliability as compared to web-only options?

Shalom--

Are there specific features/reasons why Amazon is the leader? Is it mostly cost? How do RackSpace and GoGrid compare in terms of reliability?

Thanks again for your help.

amazon's ec2 marketplace is a cloud based model for others to follow

vmware can virtaulize linux and windows I use free esx in a charity hosting various linux web servers the free version will not do fault tolerance as that needs a licence I do the admin by having a copy of the production web servers by running a script every nignt at midnight to copy the vm off the sex servers datastore. You may not be aware but linux does have virtualization tech

Lastly here is a testimonial from the CEO of Wikipedia about why Wikipedia switched from Amazon to Rackspace... http://ryandlane.com/blog/2010/09/27/switched-from-ec2-to-rackspace-cloud/

amazon ec2 cloud was involved with the play station network hack

see

that may damage the amazon cloud image
