spring event publishing

I was reading folowing lines and I did not understand clearly.
 The ApplicationContext interface has a
publishEvent() method that enables you to publish ApplicationEvents. you want to take care that any events handled in this fashion are handled
quickly. Otherwise, you application’s performance could be negatively impacted.
Unfortunately, in order to publish events, your beans will need to have access
to the ApplicationContext. This means that beans will have to be made aware of
the container that they are running in.

Any ideas, resources, sample code, links, highly appreciated. thanks in advance.
