SBS 2011 - can't install Exchange

I am in the process of setting up an SBS 2011 server. I have done the install into a VM hosted on Core Server.  Opening the Exchange Management Console and Exchange Management Shell returns errors per attached screenshots.  Nothing in the event logs that I can see.

Any ideas? User generated image User generated image

Was this a fresh install or was it installed into an existing domain? If the domain already existed, did it have any exchange servers?

The SBS 2011 VM is a fresh install, FQDN is uniqueservername.domainname.local.  This is not yet a production server but will be.  The existing network has an old W2K DC server, FQDN is uniqueservername.(same)domainname.ca.  Exchange has never been extant on this network.  All clients use POP3 mail via local ISP.  Single NIC on SBS 2011 beast.
Did you give the VM a NIC for the install? Has that NIC or virtual network been changed? This is an AD issue at first glance, and it is tough to cause this level of instability on a clean install.
The VM has it's own NIC (single) and I am able to connect to the SBS VM via RDP without issue.
