Cisco Voice Lab

I need to setup a minimum ip phone lab using Cisco router and Call manager.
Ok let s say I have a router and Vmware with Call Manager as VM machine.
Do I need Cisco IP phone ? or can I have an IP phone software simulator ? or a regular home phone is Ok?
What do I need in order to assign the phone number to the device? is this done through Call Manager?

Thanks

If you have a vm running call manager you can use sip phones like x-lite or a cisco 7940
You can add a router with an fxs module and add a home phone or you can use a cisco ata 186.
Cisco call managaer can assign numbers, so can a router running cme.
