How do I position my controls using css?

Hi,

I have the below html and asp.net controls...

<div class="srLogin">

            <div class="srLoginHeader">
	            <div class="srLoginTitle">Sign in</div>
	            <asp:HyperLink ID="hypRegister" CssClass="linkLogin" runat="server">Register with us</asp:HyperLink>

But how would I best position the different elements? Currently they're appearing one above the other where I want some of them to appear side by side.

you can use the style attribute "float" when you want  particular divs to be side-by-side.

Would I have to encapsulate these divs within a parent div or div id? Would I also be able to accurately place these divs using float as from what I can tell there's only a right or left, i.e. if the page is 1000px wide and I want a 100px div to sit right besdie another 100px div using float doesn't seem to allow this as left and right places the divs depending on the page width, also when re-sizing the page the divs seem to get too close to each other at the pages smallest?

Thanks.

If you want the divs to be next to each other, you use float.  If you then want them to be "fixed" next to each other separated by a certain number of pixels, you would place both divs within a parent div.  Here is a simple html example:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<div id="ParentDiv" style="height:500px;width:1024px;background:blue;margin-right:auto;margin-left:auto;">
<div id="ChildDiv1" style="float:left;background:gray;margin-right:50px;">Child Div 1</div>
<div id="ChildDiv2" style="float:left;background:aqua;">Child Div 2</div>
</div>
</body>

They still appear one above another with your code?

What does?  The label is supposed to as in your screen shot.  Which browser are you using?  Include version.

I checked with IE, FireFox, and Chrome and they are all identical.

Your code does seem to work when I simply save it into an htm page and load but when I place it within my page amoungst other divs the controls appear differently, i.e. one above the other....urrghhh! Guess there's something on my page preventing the desired outcome :(

Can you provide your page?

My page is the code I attached above. It's an asp.net user control being called through an index page.
