SBS 2003 SP1 Not Installed

Hi,

So I have run the BPA and it says SBS 2003 SP1 not installed.

After some reading I gather it should be installed in this order:
1.Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server® 2003 operating system
2.Windows SharePoint® Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
3.Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
4.Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
5.Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1

I checked in Add and Remove and it looks like I have some sort of SP2 update installed, do I need to uninstall first?
Or should I just go ahead and install?

Also in Sys Properties it says MS Win Server 2003 for SBS SP2

Thanks
Thanks

I have just run step 2:
Step Two: Install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

In Windows Explorer, open the SP1 folder, and then double-click WindowsServer2003-KB889101-SP1-x86-ENU.exe.

I am getting the following: "setup has detected that the Service pack version of the system is newer than the update you are applying"

Does this mean I can skip this step?

Cris HannaCommented:
You can skip all the steps except for the final one..they are most likely installed already.

So I installed:
3.Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
4.Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
5.Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1

As this is what I seemed to be missing.

Now I am getting service failed on startup.

I have internet access on the server but not on any of the workstations or the laptops connecting wirelessly through the router...

Going through the Event Viewer, I see;

Also this:
Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      DNS
Event Category:      None

Time:            18:30:46

Description:
DNS server has updated its own host (A) records.  In order to ensure that its DS-integrated peer DNS servers are able to replicate with this server, an attempt was made to update them with the new records through dynamic update.  An error was encountered during this update, the record data is the error code.

If this DNS server does not have any DS-integrated peers, then this error
should be ignored.

If this DNS server's Active Directory replication partners do not have the correct IP address(es) for this server, they will be unable to replicate with it.

To ensure proper replication:
1) Find this server's Active Directory replication partners that run the DNS server.
2) Open DnsManager and connect in turn to each of the replication partners.
3) On each server, check the host (A record) registration for THIS server.
4) Delete any A records that do NOT correspond to IP addresses of this server.
5) If there are no A records for this server, add at least one A record corresponding to an address on this server, that the replication partner can contact.  (In other words, if there multiple IP addresses for this DNS server, add at least one that is on the same network as the Active Directory DNS server you are updating.)
6) Note, that is not necessary to update EVERY replication partner.  It is only necessary that the records are fixed up on enough replication partners so that every server that replicates with this server will receive (through replication) the new data.

Tomorrow I would run the BPA again
Check event logs tomorrow also to see if you have the same errors.
Are you having network issues after the install?

can you assign a static IP in the correct range to a workstation and have it connect?
Is DNS server running?
0

edli83Author Commented:
If I use a static ip it connects and I have internet access
I still have no access to the server though

DNS has started in services.msc

Cris HannaCommented:
It sounds like DHCP might be corrupt, or an issue with DNS
can you ping the server by name and IP?

edli83Author Commented:
times out and cannot find host

i have already deleted the dhcp folder and set the scope again.

Cris HannaCommented:
have you tried running the BPA again?  Don't change anything..just see what it shows

edli83Author Commented:
Just tried:

Error Windows SBS 2003 Service Pack 1 not installed
Error Internet Connection Sharing should be disabled
Error Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 RTM version is running
Error POP3 Connector has not been updated
Error Task Offloading is enabled
Error Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 RTM version installed

Cris HannaCommented:
The first thing is that Internet Connection Sharing should be disabled
0

edli83Author Commented:
It seems like Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is stopped already.
I have set it to disabled and running a restart now

edli83Author Commented:
ok that seemed to have done the trick - thanks!!!

Cris HannaCommented:
Ok..at this point you might want to rethink applying SP1
Were you doing this in preparation for migration?
0

edli83Author Commented:
I am now nervous to apply SP1 just in case anything goes wrong

No, I was trying to setup RDP, but i was having some trouble with it freezing, I believe SP1 is supposed to resolve this....
0

Cris HannaCommented:
When you say RDP are saying you're trying to setup the SBS Server as a Terminal Server or you just having trouble establishing an RDP session to the server?
0

edli83Author Commented:
I would like to use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the server remotely so I ran the Wizard to configure this but the status bar freezes

Cris HannaCommented:
Have you tried Remote Web Workplace?
0

edli83Author Commented:
Ok so I installed the updates and when I logon to the server I get a blank screen, the taskbar etc doesn't load

If I ctrl alt del I can get the task manager to come up...

explorer.exe is running.

edli83Author Commented:
So this only happens with the administrator account, I have just tried to logon via another admin account and it works....
0

Cris HannaCommented:
Somthing's happened with the Domain Administrator account then...Appears the profile maybe corrupt OR screen resolution settings?

Are you trying both logons from the same machine?

edli83Author Commented:
i am trying both logons from the server machine
what is the best method to remedy?
thanks

Cris HannaCommented:
I would probably delete the Administrator's Profile *****NOTE******
DO NOT DELETE THE ADMINISTRATORS ACCOUNT

If you're not sure the difference..DO NOTHING

edli83Author Commented:
that seemed to have worked - thanks
