Ubuntu with installed Win. apps

Hello,

I just installed ubuntu for the first time.  I installed it along side Windows so that I could have both and I wasn't sure if I should or want to commit to it.  Anyway, do I have to reinstall the apps I had in Windows to have access to them in ubuntu or can I just create shortcuts to executables?

Now that ubuntu is installed I just feel handicapped because I have none of my development apps.

Windows and Ubuntu (or any linux) are two separate systems, normally executables in one are not accessable in the other, and even if they are they would not normally work.

However there is an application in linux called Wine (http://www.winehq.org) this will allow lots of windows programs to run under linux.  However you will still have to re-install them under Wine in Ubuntu (you can search in the wine site to make sure your programs will work), however as they are separate operating systems, you may not be licensed to run more than one copy, it depends on the license.

The other alternative is to look at a free linux alternative to the apps you require

If you application are compatible with ubuntu (type java or python, ...) you can use a shortcut if you have permision in the antoher partition.

What kind of application do you want to run in Ubuntu?
There are thousands of free software in Linux world (Ubuntu).
Just go to "Software Center" and check
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftwareCenterFAQ

As liddler mentioned, Windows software are not binary compatible in Linux.
So either find the alternative in Linux or use wine (might not work all the time).

List the Windows software you want in Ubuntu, we might be able to give you the suggestion about the alternatives in Ubuntu (linux).

GIMP -- Photoshop
Songbird -- iTune
