OK to install MS SQL 2008R2 64 bit STANDARD on Windows 2008R2 64 bit ENTERPRISE?

Our organization has standardized on Windows 2008R2 64 bit ENTERPRISE..

To save costs, we would like to install MS SQL 2008R2 64 bit STANDARD on the above box.

Any problems with this  (i.e. enterprise for OS. standard for SQL)?  (The hardware is Dell server class.)

Also, to go one level of complexity higher, we would like to consider installing the above in VMware.
Again, any known problems?

[We do not plan to do clustering of the db or anything like that.]

Thanks.

No, there are no problems with what you have mentioned. However there are some features in Enterprise that are not in Standard which you may need.

One that I found was that with reporting services, you could not create data driven subscriptions, which I use for mailing reports.

You can always upgrade you edition at any time via the installation tool > maintenance, edition upgrade.
