I am VERY new to UNIX and VMWARE command line stuff

Why cant I dc to the directories in the pic ?

change directory to the /bin directory and then try

cd <directory name>

it looks like you were in the /bin directory, and then you issued

a cd ..

to change up out of the bin directory to root /

and then tried to change to a directory, that was in /bin

they are symbolic links

a special type of file that contains a reference to another file or directory in the form of an absolute or relative path and that affects pathname resolution.

a directory or folder that you can change into would have a d at the start of the directory listing.
