testing hard drives

I have a bunch of hard drives that I need to test.  I'm looking for a hard ware device, not just setting up a desktop and booting off a live cd with utliities.  I've seen a few hard ware devices for this.  Does anyone have any recomedations for one?

Are you talking about equipment for testing hard drives? Like these below:
Or this one:
You can find them at: http://www.hdd.ji2.com/products/hard_drive_test_wipe_repair.html

Personally... there is nothing you can't do with a Desktop. The best data recovery centers use desktops with special data recovery cards (hardware) to repair and recover data.

I think you'll find that using several PCs such as low-profile Dell Optiplexes is a lot cheaper.  In addition, using PCs doesn't tie you to a single manufacturer that may want a lot of money to update their tester to handle new products.

The problem I have with using a desktop is putting together a multi removable hot swap for IDE and sata drives.  Then you have to deal with the problems of a desktop.  The benefit I see in using a hardware device is it is built for doing just that.
You may like this one then. It allows you to use it as a "Stand-Alone" duplicator, hot swapable and also as a HDD docking station if required. The price is around $200. You can shop for it as:

StarTech UNIDUPDOCK Hard Drive Dock/Duplicator
Hard Drive Docking Station - Stand-Alone
Some of the Specs:

Stand-alone push-button control and LCD display combined with HDD cloning feature provides a simple way to create 1:1 copies of hard drives without connecting to a host computer.
Small form factor design leaves much of the drive surface exposed, ensuring maximum dissipation of operating heat
Built-in short circuit protection eliminates drive shorts, ensuring true hot-swapping capability
Fast and easy plug and play installation of the hard drives enables quick, convenient access to data without having to mount the hard drives in an enclosure

Considering the pricing and the features, I hope it meets your needs.
