Mailboxes archived with exmerge, but database size has not decreased

Hi

I've been through a process of usinn exmerge to delete all emails over 18 months old across the board on all mailboxes. But the database is still the same size. I started purging this email a few days ago but so far the private store has not changed size. I thought the defrag of the database ran overnight?

Do i need to manually run eseutil to get the disk space back?

Which version of Exchange ae you using?
In 2003 only an offline defrag  or a mailbox move will clear the holes. If you have multiple sites where you can queue the mailflow you can do an offline defrag overnight. Or.. Move all mailboxes to an empty store .. And delete the old store that will purge them.
If you are using Exchange 2003, or 2007/2010 come to that, you might want to check the Deleted Item retention settings.  You may need to reduce your retention period and possibly back up the store before the defrag if you have that option configured.

Thanks for your replies. Its exhange 2003 on 2003 small business server. Its approaching the 75gb limit , there was about 8 years worth of email in most peoples mailboxes. I've exported it all for backup purposes and used exmerge to delete all items older than 18 months.

I need to do something which will give us the disk space back we need. exmerge has dumped a lot of gb, but the database doesnt show this.

Its a small business. 10 to 12 users. I can run whatever commnds are required to complete over the weekend. All the mailboxes are backed up.

Would welcome suggestions.
The problem is that you can only do an offline defrag per store and small business doesn't allow for extra stores .. 75 GB will take a lot of time..

In do think offline defrag is your best bet on as system like that.

Since you already have a good backup it would be smart to start asap. And have enough storage for a backup directly after the defrag.
