this appears when you don't create site collection at Root.

Ex:
you may many site collection as like:
http://servername/managedpath/sitecolectionname

but you do not have:
http://servername.

THis is called a Root Site Collection.

Create this, resolves ur issue, as ssp is asking for root site collection which it is not able to find and so throwing error.

i have created few Documents and Picture Library then upload some test files and then try to search them.

now , how can i create "Root Site Collection" while being on the Root it self?

well, it is just like the way you create a site collection.
only difference is do not include any managed path use /.
that's it.

a root site url looks like:
http://servername

for creating so, go to central administration > applications > CREATE A SITE COLLECTION.

This will get consumed in the default content database avail if its limits are not changed from what it has by default.

Hello There ,

I think we need to more information from you to help you better.

Are you able to go to your Central administration , Application management.

Can you send a list of the [List of applications ]

Also Under Application management select Site Collections List under Site Collections.
that will give you a list of the site colelctions.

If you want you can share with a screen shot and we will be able to assist you

Best of luck.

WSS# search does not work "out of the box" because it doe not have any credentials to work with. there can also be an issue with IIS Loopback that stops it searching.

1. Credentials
Central Administration
 - Operations
  - Services on Server
   - Sharepoint Servcies Search
    - Configure some credentials (test with your administrator account if you have to, but then later give it a domain user account only)

2. IIS Loopback
this stops a server/user browsing/authenticating to an site on the same server
Depending on how secure you fel like being - Method one or two from this technote
