Does Visual Studio 2010 includes Visual Studio 2008?

After installing Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate in my laptop that had no previous versions installed I was surprised to see both 2010 and 2008 appearing in the programs menu in the Windows start button

Does this mean that 2010 includes previous versions of the product.

Also I wonder why a "Visual Studio 2005" folder was created in the documents folder as well

No. However apparently the express edition of SQL server 2008 comes with the VS2010 installtion. Though only the server component is installed. The client (management studio) is not included.

hmm but somehow there is a "Microsoft Visual studio 2008" entry in the start menu, which suggest that VS2008 is installed, however when launched the splash screen reads "Visual Studio 2008 Shell", suggesting this is what appears to be the shell version of the studio. Also most of the important project templates (C#, VB...etc)  are absent from the New project menu. So I suppose om_prakash_p is right about VS2010 not including previous versions.

As for what VS2008 doing in my start menu I guess its essentially a  non functional VS2008 that comes installed with 2010 for some reason. Any idea if it is of any use and hence safe to remove?

>>It was installed with sql server since it is the host of bids<<
So I take that I shouldn't remove the VS2008 shell since its required for SQL server 2008 to function. Should?
