Can't open PDF and Word files

I recently retired and I had copied numerous files that I now can't open with my home computer. The PDF files were created in 2006 and I am trying to open them with Adobe Aerobat 9 Pro Extended. The property info on the Word files indicate that they are Word 1997-2003 documents and I am trying to use Office 2010 to open them. I had assumed that both the applications that I am using would be able to convert these older file types.

Try copying the files to a generic c:\temp directory on your home computer. Copy, do NOT move. Then try to open them from the new location.

It is likely a permission problem. Office 2010 will open Office 97-2003 files just fine. I do it all the time. Likewise, Adobe Reader or Acrobat V9 and V10 will read V6 PDF files just fine. So it is likely permissions.

Also you do not need to convert the files if you are just reading them. ... Thinkpads_User

You could try posting a sample of each one here to see how we get on with it. Word 2010 should be able to open Word files from  Word 97 onwards.

I'm sorry, but the file "-WRD0468.doc" just isn't a Word document. Apart from anything else, it is far too small. It may be a snapshot of changes that Word creates while editing, but only uses for recovery after problens with the editing session.

You apparently got a bad copy. Is it possible to go back to the source documents and re-copy them?

I am unable to access the original source. Office 2010 and aerobat 9 Pro opens Word 97-2003 documents and PDF files  approx. 75% of the time but I am uneasy in deleting the files that couldn't be open. I was hoping that there would be software available that would overcome the problems.

Any other sugesstions would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you got a bad copy (which I think you did) the files are no longer in any recognizable form. So they are simply gone. Given you cannot go back to the source, the only ones you have are the ones you can open.

It is for certain that this is not a Word (or Word version) issue or an Adobe (or Adobe version) issue.

So theoretically, if you could take these "bad" files back to the source computer, they would most likely not open there either.

I looked at the messages and there is no software I have heard of that will fix the files because they are damaged.  ... Thinkpads_User
