don't use the openmanage tool to do the install with, as this is intended to install "extra" tools to monitor the host with...usually in a another hard-drive partition.  Since you are wanting to install onto a USB drive and VMware has specific partitions already mapped out during the install, you won't be using the local HD's to boot from; thus negating any positive affects for doing this.

just boot from the ESXi Hypervisor ISO/CD and install.

also, Dell has it's own specific ESXi image for non-free versions of ESXi, which do include some openmanage components so if you ever plan to use this in a paid-license configuration; you will want to use the image from Dell.

you want VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0.update1-348481.x86_64

vmware tools is installed within the guest after you have installed the OS.  The installation files are stored on the host and they can handle most installations but occasionally you may want to download the install bits separately.

I would actually recommend using VMware Go, as this is your first time using VMware vSphere Hypervisor.

VMware Go is a very simple, educational website, that will take you through the interactive steps of downloading the  VMware vSphere Hypervisor, and from installation to correct configuration, to installing your first virtual machine using a browser and Go Client.

VMware Go - The quickest way to launch server virtualization.

The download you need for your Dell Server is

Andrew Hancock (VMware vExpert / EE MVE^2)VMware and Virtualization ConsultantCommented:
they are all free. they run in evaluation mode for 60 days unless you apply a free license that you must register for, or a paid license that you pay money for.

use VMware Go it will make it easier for you as it is interactive step by step

bgoeringCommented:
The installable bits are the same for the free edition as well as the non-free edition. It is the license key that makes the difference. When you install the hypervisor it operations in:

Full function "evaluation mode" for 60 days where all features of the most expensive licensed version are available for that limited time.

"Free" mode where you install the license key you received when you registered to download the free edition.

or

Some form of "Licensed" mode where you receive the features that you are paying for.

At any time (but no later than 60 days after first install) either the "free" or the "paid" license must be installed or the product will no longer allow you to create and power on virtual machines.

I also have a R710 for my home lab box with ESXi 4.1 U1 installed on a USB key. The process is straightforward, just download the hypervisor, burn to CD, boot from the CD and specify the USB stick as the destination for the install. You may do that either with the Dell customized (recommended if you use Open Manage or other Dell tools to manage your environment) or the generic version of ESXi.

Hope this helps

Just boot with the downloaded vmware iso - do not use the openmanage installation utility. Then select to install to your USB key.

I think the A03 sounds like a BIOS level for Dell (I believe that is what mine is but can't recall for sure). If you see A03 as the BIOS level when you boot your server download the first one.

I would download A04, the license will still work with it.

License will work with either one. For a fresh install I generally go with latest available so if it were me I would get the A04 version from the dell support site
