Adding an MX record early?

I have to change our public IP's this week, I was wondering if I could add an mx record early to avoid the 24-48 propagation time? I think I know the answer already, just wanted to see if there is an easier way to switching it over. Thanks.

There should be no problem in adding an MX record early. Make it so that the new record has a higher priority than your existing. When people send in emails, if the highest priority MX server is unavailable, then the mails should route to the next highest.

As roybridge says, if the first MX record doesn't respond then the next MX record will be tried.

lower number = higher priority

MX record value 10 is higher priority / preference than MX record value 20

no need to change MX record.

only change the A record where the MX record points...

Sulimanw,

Can I add the new A address early? I was confused earlier, it is actually the A record that I would like to change.
