Which SSL Certs to use

I'm building a password protected online application for a client to use.  The system is designed to give an apartment complex the ability to store information.  The database will house SSN, banking information and other personal information.  At some point I would like to be able to make payments as well.  So the tenants can log on and pay their rent, bills, etc.  I'm new to SSL so I don't really know where to start.  What type of SSL should I get.  I was thinking of going with VeriSign.  Thanks for the help.  If you need additional information let me know.
