Google Analytics Campaigns

I am trying to do a referral program for our bookstore and do not know how Google Analytics is processing this data anymore.  I used to be able to do this: http://www.website.com/bookstore/store/details.php?id=1820&utm_source=USER&utm_medium=USER&utm_campaign=CAMPAIGN but that does not seem to be how it is tracked anymore.  On Amazon's website I see: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1599951045/thegospcoal-20 where thegospcoal-20 is actually a user that is being tracked.  Any clue either how the new google analytics does tracking of campaigns or how amazon did this?

utm_source, etc is still how you track from variables in the url

Maybe amazon is storing the details for user thegospcoal-20 in a database and tracking virtual page views and/or events with _trackPageview and _trackEvent
