Image recognition in java

Hey,

I've never handled images before... in any language before (with the exception of displaying whatever I'm given).  I tried searching for a proper java library that assisted with image recognition, haven't had much success...

Are there any free open source image recognition API's out there?

Appreciate any help on this!

Hm... I'm actually trying to build a barcode scanner, are there any pre-defined libraries to recognize alpha numeric characters?

Some of the above are Optical Character Recognition (OCR) programs, so they should be concerned with it.
