Lower the number of delivery retries Exchange 2007

Hey experts,
I got what I think is a simple question.
We got a exchange 2007 server with a smart host.

We if wend a email to multiple receipts and one of them fails the server retries to deliver the "message" 10 times.  The issue with this is if we send a email to 5 people it tries to deliver 10 times to all 5 people causing 4of those people to get 10 copies of that email.

So what we would like to do is remove that retry or set it down to retry 1 time.

In case someone is wondering the message we are getting back from the smart house which causing it to resend is.
(550 Requested action was not taken because this server doesn't handle mail for that user)

If the mail reaches 4 users, it is going to retry for the 5th user and all of the retry and notification should be given back only to the mail-sender (not to all of the receipients)

Ended up removing the smart host as we were not able to resolve this issue.

Solutions would have worked but ended up just removing settings.
