Hello Guys,
I've been doing a research on SEO companies in the market the last couple of days, and I was wondering where do they get the keywords popularity.
There is alot of websites online that offer SEO softwares for small business, and most of them use the same technique when you register with them they will ask you about your website and 3 competitive websites in addition to the best keywords that can describe the website, after that they calculate those keywords and show the position of the website on certain search engines.

To be clear, is there any service they are connecting to it to gather these info , or how does it work ?

Many directly or indirectly use Googles Keyword tool to get search data:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

There are quite a few tools out there that can help automate it as well as gather competition levels and SERPs (Search Engine Result Positions) for you.

Some even generate the reports that these SEO companies send to their clients!

everything traffictravis offers can be scraped from the web.

web software charges per month because that is the business model of hosted software.  they have monthly expenses to cover like hosting and bandwidth.
