Along with my small MP4 video file, I saw a small file (1/10 size of my MP4) with the same name but with a SWF extension.

The shockwave file is a wrapper for your MP4 file for use on the web. Unless you are using HTML5 then you can not use the MP4 file on the web.

a wrapper is a method so that a non-web file can be used on the web. In this case Mp4 is not a standard web video file but shockwave (swf) is a widely supported format so it is included with your output if you wish to put your video on the web.
