Scheduling Updating Windows AVG and Restarts

We have multiple servers and i am looking for an easy way to schedule windows updates, antivirus updates and server restarts for a specific day and time of the week.

Currently I have no way of knowing if ether of these updates require a restart I just log on one day and it says the server needs to be restarted.   therefore I want to do a restart once a week after the updates.

How do you handle this?

One unique situation is the Virtual Machine Host Servers.    If I restart them I assume all the hosts must be shutdown first.

Check Microsoft System Center products http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/default.aspx

Windows updates only can be managed by WSUS (which is free) but for the other stuff you need an IT management product.

We you can schedule the shutdown command to restart servers. Check the help for its options or the following link http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/datacenter/restart-windows-server-2003-from-the-command-line/245

can you elaborate on microsoft system center and how this helps me?   I can schedule all the updates and restarts through this?   Including third party products such as AVG?

The product that could help you is SCCM http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/configuration-manager/cm-capabilities.aspx

Configuration Manager 2007 Software Update Management simplifies the complex task of delivering and managing updates to IT systems across the enterprise. IT administrators can deliver updates of Microsoft products, third-party applications, custom in-house line-of-business applications, hardware drivers, and system BIOS to a variety of devices—including to desktops, laptops, servers, and mobile devices.

Most of the Anti-Virus software can be deployed using SCCM.

There are demos, datasheets, and more information on the web site that you can consult. There is also a trial version of the software that can be downloaded.
