Do you have a third machine?

What you could do is run plink on your windows 7 machine, but let it not listen to 127.0.0.1, but to an external interface.

Then you could try to run a browser on another machine, which tries to use the plink proxy.

Then you yould start wireshark (network packet sniffer)  either on the windows 7 host or on your third machine to see exactly what packets are sent to the proxy created by plink.

As far as I know wireshark is not capable to listen on localhost.
Thus my suggestion to involve a third PC.

Anyone success  do this, plink - firefox proxy  working  on win7?

gheistCommented:
plink provides ONLY socks proxy
mentioning other proxies arebetween useless and grave mistake.

gelonidaCommented:
gheist, I agree with you.

I was also puzzled how a socks proxy should act as http proxy, but thought, there is just something I don't understand.

zcfyhome

Do you have the same Firefox configuration and proxy settings on the host, that is working with plink?

What can i suggest - if you get angry enough do a warranty return....

Or better for your own nerves try to follow our suggestions CAREFULLY.

Firefox proxy configuration is not significantly different from IE one.

In windows 7 you have to run this command

netsh winhttp set proxy ProxyServer:PortNumber

more info check this kb..the article also supports win7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937151

You might have to restart the computer...

Well I made some experiments and I can make plink and firefox work.

Howver there seems to be some problems. with starting plink, stopping plink and retrying or when starting firefox first.

Please try following my steps exactly. There might be some unnecessary steps, but this is what I did.
As soon as you made it working you can  make some other experiments.
I strongly recommend to change the port number for each experiment.
Even after quitting plink and  firefox the listening port might be blocked for a certain time and thas render your consecutive experiment invalid.

1.) Configure your fixefox proxy values.
===================================

Try following proxy configuration:
check "manual proxy confgurations"
uncheck "use this proxy server or all protocols"
empty all fields except
SOCKS host *set it to 127.0.0.1 )
and the port for the SOCKS host. to the port you want to use (e.g. 8881 )
set it to SOCKS 5

I strongly propose to net set it to 8880 if you made some successless experiments before and you didn't wait long enough / reboot)

2.) Quit firefox
=============

3.) start plink with the same port
===========================

plink user@proxyhost -D 8881

4.) start firefox
============

5.) Enjoy (hopefully)

Tested with plink Development snapshot 2011-04-09:r9149
Firefox 4.01
Windows 7 64 bits (service pack 1)
