users are complaining that on their laptops it now takes an age to shut down when there are updates available. then it takes longer to log on because of it. Is there a way of doing this overnight, restarting and finalising before they try and log in. maybe a lunchtime period?

I don't know the size of your network. Meaning, if it's feasible to visit each station.
You can manually configure updates using the informaiton given here.
Normally, networked systems are configured through their respective servers to receive updates. Those updates can be scheduled as well from the server(s). You only need to ensure that all systems are powered on.

You should also try to have all users restart their computers when leaving for the night.  That way it will automatically reboot the machine (if no user is logged on) at night.  Also check and make sure your PC's aren't going to hibernate, as that will stop it from searching for updates.  And try to configure the Windows Updates to Automatic.
If you don't want the computers on all night, you can configure the time so that it happens earlier, but that's the gist of the problem.  The computer needs to be left on overnight to get updates and automatically reboot.

    Accepted Solution

The issue is more the fact that they go to shut their machines down and it starts installing updates. they want to get away quickly and sometimes have to wait or interupt the installations.

We are going to use a group policy to take away the option to install on shutdown. Do not display “Install Updates and Shut Down” only for the laptop users

    Many thanks for your help.
