grub boot loader on linux

Dear Experts:

I have installed ubuntu desktop 10.4 on the laptop on 100 GB of hdd and recently installed windows 7 professional as a dual boot on the remaining free space which was not used by the ubuntu,as MBR is erased after the installation of windows hence did boot from kinnopix cd and when execute the command
# grub
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
Error 15:File not found
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs,partition type 0*83

grub> setup (hd0)
checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
checking if "grub/stage1" exists .. no
Error 15:File not found

pleae helphelp me how to fix this ,Thanks in advance.

are you sure that you do not have a separate partition for / boot?
What is the version of your grub
grub-install -v

Thanks for the reply, i have booted through the knoppix CD , grub version is Grub0.97. Please help to safely use both the OS.

Remember the "sudo update-grub" at the end
