Run Backup Exec on Virtual Machine

Hello again friends!

I am planning a network upgrade and am on a tight budget unfortunately. The client is currently on SBS 2003 on very antiquated hardware. The plan is to upgrade to SBS 2011 and run it in a virtual environment using Hyper-V with the bare metal running Server 2008R2.

The issue is that I want to use the latest Backup Exec Small Business 2010 considering it is less expensive by a large margin than purchasing a server agent, Exchange agent, etc. Has anyone ran the Backup Exec Media Server on a virtual machine? We backup to LTO tape drives so obviously a connection to a SCSI interface is needed. I am not sure if you can attach the SCSI device to the VM or not as I have never tried this.

Alternatively, if its supported I could run Backup Exec Small Business 2010 on the bare metal if it will install considering it is not SBS. Any insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated as i am currently laying out the scope of the project and this is certainly an important aspect to consider.

You can't attach a VM to a SCSI tape drive in Hyper-V. You would need to use iSCSI. I suggest looking at some sort of disk based and/or offsite backup solution. There are many options to choose from.
