Windows updates fail!?

I recently had the Windows Defender virus on my computer. I removed it with MalwareBytes. Ever since then, Windows updates have not worked. When I shut down the computer, it gives the "installing updates screen" and when I start it up too. It stays at 0% for a long time, then says updates failed and loads Windows. I ran Avast Antivirus, full scan -- it found nothing.

I am not sure what additional info to give. I have Windows 7.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Here are some troubleshooting ideas
If no success, try the Reset here (#2)
    and if still no success

And finally, if any of the Updates are Security Updates (as they almost certainly are), MS offers free support
Be sure to mention this is a Security Update.

Thank you for all your advice. The manual update worked, but I suspect I will need the other recommended tools in the future. Thanks again!
