exe associations issue

There is a user profile on a computer... when they open word... it says, cannot find exe.

When they open paint for example, it says "open with" list of programs and doesn't associate right.

When they click on other exe files, it still says, cann't find the exe.

The os is XP and it is only happening with one profile.

We have deleted and renamed his profile. It worked for a little bit, but then has the same problem again.

Any ideas?

do you have roaming profiles?

check for drive corruption, registry corruption or viruses.

you might run ccleaner and do registry check.

I would turn off roaming profiles and delete the profile again.

then give the system a good cleansing.

As already  stated, this is possibly from a malware attack....

Ok, in that case, I would also scan with MalwareBytes. SEP doesnt detect most of the rogue malwares out there...
