Hi,

I have a question about problem expanding a virtual disk on a MSA2012 configured with RAID-5. The system has 12 slots and the current configuration has 7 disks (RAID-5 level) and 1 disk as global spare.

I would like to add 4 disks and expand the current virtual disk configured in the system, but I have heard that there could be problems with that raid level...

The installed disks have 146 Gb. At this time there are disk with more capacity available, another thing to take into account... I would like to be sure the thing to do to avoid problems with the system expand.

Thanks in advanced.

I would add one disk at a time.  I had an experience (albeit with SATA drives) that took 3 weeks to expand VDISK with 2 500GB SATA drives.  The SAS drives should be faster but if you do a single disk you can baseline how long it will take.  During the process one of the drives in the raid5 failed and I was really worried that another drive failure would take down the entire system since it can't do a rebuild onto hot spare during the procedure

I didn't remember exactly the time that took the initialization of my system, but now I remember that it was a lot... I'm worry about the availability of the system during this process... I can't compromise the current environment...

This is why I would do this one at a time over the weekend so that usage is low and availability of backups is crucial

... but then there is no problem expanding the configuration I have... If it takes a lot of time I will keep it in mind.

Thanks for the info... only one more question... Is it possible to expand a volume that it's being used?, I need to expand a volume that contains some virtual machines and I would like to avoid stopping the services.

I know that I can do at the windows level, but I haven't done it at the MSA level.

Regards.
