Hard Drive Striping

I installed five 2TB hard drives in my PC and I'm trying to stripe them. I have windows installed on a hard drive and I'm setting the extra drives up as a DVR storage.

During the striping process I select the five drives that I want to stripe and the total volume size comes to 9538635MB but the maximum amount of space is only 1907727MB. I continue with the process anyway.

If I have the process format the drives it will fail. If I don't allow it to format the drives it stripes the drives just fine. I then go to format it afterwards and the format fails.

I had these drives striped and formatted before, but I recently reloaded Windows 7 Professional.

Is there a common issue that could be causing this problem?

One or more of the disks may be failing. As a test, try to format each disk individually with no striping.

Thanks for the quick response.

I formatted all of them separately and I noticed that one kind of lagged and took a lot longer to format than the others.

I'll go through the process again and provide more detail.

On that slower disk, you may also want to try a more detailed exam. Try downloading and using the hard drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic tools or using a third-party software such as SpinRite http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm.

Note: You do realize that if you get this RAID 0 system up and running, losing a member disk later means you lose the entire volume? With that many disks, you may want to try RAID 5. That way, you can lose 1 disk and not lose the whole set or your data. There are other RAID alternatives, as well - RAID 1 and RAID 10.
