Shadow copies on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box seemed to disappear

Yesterday I was doing a restore on a server with a number of shadow copies when the version I needed was no longer available.  It seemed to vanish.  I think another time I was on a different server and the same thing happened, then later they came back.  This time they did not come back.  I can see there is plenty of space on the separate partition holding the shadow copies.  I also think the space used indicates that somewhere in there are the missing shadow copies.  I also wonder why when I look at the partition holding the shadow copies I can see space used, but I see no contents.

It may be that there is a limit set on how much space to use for the VSS. When this is configured, you can choose a maximum size or unlimited. If there is a certain size limit set, it doesn't matter how much free space is on the disk. The system will delete as necessary for space purposed. I would check the settings for shadow copies.
