Where is my Site Column?

I have a site Projects and a subsite, project Archive.

on the subsite is a list. I created a lookup site column based on this list and added it to the custom site column group.

I would like use this site column in the Project list but I can't see it on the main site. i assume because it's from the subsite. (thanks microsoft)

how can I get to that site column? data? etc?

If you are using SharePoitn 2007, you need to create the site column at the site collection level.  Create in the top level site, under Settings - Site Columns.

You may be able to create it under the subsite as well....but the import thing is to create it on the Site Columns page, not at the list.

the issue is that the data I want is on a sub site.

I know.  I'm saying, you need to manually create it where I said, if you want it to be available to all subsites within a site collection.

I created the site column on the subsite where the data exists.

I am not able to add the column to the parent site - it's not available to me in the list.

I can only create a site column where the data exists on the subsite.

Am I missing a step to make it available to the whole site collection?

Bro, I'm trying to tell you.......columns are ONLY available to the WHOLE site collection when they are created in the Site Columns gallery from the top level site.  This is accessed through Site Settings, it's under the Galleries column, on the top level site.

When you create a column at the list level of any site or at the sub site level, it's not going to be available in other places.

Thanks. What you are saying is that the site column is only available from that site down. I get it.

I am unable to create a site column in the site above that points to the list from the site below (does not show up as a datasource selection).

Unless I MOVE the child site I cannot create a site column with the data available that I need.

So the answer to my question is NO, it cannot be done OOTB. That you CANNOT get the data from a child site - that data needs to exist somewhere else.

Looks like it can be accomplished with jquery and some free stuff on codeplex. I will post back what I finally get working.

Have you every done what I'm asking to do? Create a lookup field from data on a subsite? or Cross Site? Just curious about what kind of issues you may have run in to...

No, that's not what I'm saying.  It doesn't matter the direction.  A subsite above another subsite can NOT share site columns (regardless of what type of column).  The only way is to creat them in the site column gallery, on the top level site.  Then they are available to ALL sub sites.

I have created site columns that look up values from a list in a completely different web application.  That can be done out of the box.  We had a web app that was pretty much dedicated to hosting a list that contained a bunch of master values.  Then in other web apps, on each top level site, we would create a look up column to that list.  Then we could use that column thoughout all subsites in that site collection.  That was the only real way of doing it in 2007.  In 2010, it's a different story.

You should try to do the same.

Are you creating the site columns where the list resides and then importing/exporting them?

I cannot create a site column at the top level is the list does not exist there.

What's your step by step guide? I really would like to do it!
