FN key works only half the laptop keys

I have strange event happening on a DELL Vostro laptop with WinXP. He uses a LCD external monitor with laptop. The problem is that all the keys on the left side of keyboard (which includes the CRT/LCD function) does not work. However on the right side of keyboard, those function keys do work. How is it possible half the FN keys work and the other half does not? I assume this is a hardware problem. I have tried the shift-scroll lock, etc combinations and nothing rectifies the issue. Right now he cannot use the external monitor - which does work on another PC.

He may have spilt something on the keyboard, or it might be a hardware fault, or it might be that the ribbon cable has come loose.

It's not uncommon for one side of a keyboard to fail. You'll probably have to buy and fit a replacement keyboard...

It could be a hardware or software related issue. Run the onscreen keyboard and check if the function keys are OK. If the keys function OK via the onscreen keyboard its an indication that your keyboard has an issue.

You could reset the keyboard cable and see if it helps. Worst case you will have to change the key board.
