Error when trying to send email request to access site

Users who are requesting access to a SharePoint site or document library via the email request are seeing: Error: E-mail to owner could not be sent.

We have Exchange 2007 and WSS 3.0 on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP 2

This might be related to the upgrade from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 and how the SharePoint site and the other SP servers are set up to deliver email requests.  They may be set up for Exchange 2003 servers which won’t work with the Exchange 2007 servers.

Could this be the problem? This was working before updates were applied recently.

    Accepted Solution

Check the smtp server name in your central admin outgoing email settings. Make sure its pointing to the upgraded Exchange 2007

Thanks, I configured WSS to use the Exchnage 2007. So, I stopped the service. The status status says "Stopping" but it has been for a while. Is there something I need to do on the Exchange Server 2007 side.

    Assisted Solution

You might want the excahnge server to allow emails from the WSS server in case its using a different domain. If they r on the same domain which is usually the case, nothing is needed to be done on the Exchange side.

We have Exchange 2007 running on the server that I configured in WSS for the out going email, but it only works with SMTP services. Email was able to go out if used a SMTP.  So, does WSS 3.0 outgoing email work with Exchange 2007?
