Can't Import .wmv file into imovie

We can't import a .wmv file into imovie no a macbook pro.  we get a "the file will not be imported.  it is not compatible with imovie" error message, even after we convert the file to a movie file through quicktime.   one thing i notice is that these clips are much smaller than other clips that have imported successfully, like 2meg per 30 seconds opposed to 50 meg per 30.   Thanks in advance.

The overall answer was stated in my 1st comment. The application "Imovie" doesn't support the video type. Thus making you have to change video type to anything other than ".wmv" prior to being able to import it into imovie. Mpeg was a universal vid. type example.
