Suggestions for creating web application for both GUI and backend.

Very soon I will be converting a fairly large desktop application into a web based application and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some technologies that are easy to implement and don't have too large of a learning curve.
Let me start by saying that I am currently a .Net developer and I am aware of ASP .Net and such but I'm not very impressed with the GUI that gets generated in the IDE. I'd like the application to have that crisp windows-type look and feel as well has being a powerful application without having to reload the page on every click. Should I go with PHP, can I stick with .Net and use some other tech for the front end? What would you suggest?
I'll split points between the first 2 or 3 suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

    jacko, thanks!
WPF looks like a good start. I have looked at Silverlight in the past but they seemed to have problems connecting to databases and being truly dynamic. Not sure if they have improved this though.
