Calculate appearing on the left hand courner

I was asked to help someone yesterday with the their the Excel (2003) spreadsheet.  It was a basic sum problem.  I used the sum formula, pressed F9 and for some reason it wouldn't caluclate.  The format was in numbers, and the work calculate appeared in the left hand corner of excel.

Would anyone know what caused this.  I don't have the spreadsheet available to show you.

It is taking as text value......Is it imported from Access or something? You might want to select that column and from Data -> Text to Column and will solve the issue

Calcualtion was in automatic mode, and there were no circular references

What did it return? A formula always tries to calculate if it is entered manually into a cell like that, even if calculation is set to manual.
