Roaming Profiles and Offline Files

Our domain envirnoment uses roaming profiles for Documents, App data and desktop.
I have one user that now wants to be able to use his laptop at home with offline access to his profile and files. How to do this? This is a server 2003 domain with a Windows 7 workstation. Thanks.

In theory, yes.....

Offline files in Win7 is MUCH improved over XP. But,m it still has issues periodically, as with anything else.....

As long as you are NOT caching domain logons, and if the Offline Files is already in place, it is ready to go.....

Sorry, meant to say "Not Caching" as in explicitly denying the use of them, or have the CachedLogonsCount to 0....

The OS will cache 10 logons for the machine by default, as long as you dont set any policies to prevent it....

Will he be able to logon with his domain username when the domain is not present?

Wait, what happens if we don't use offline files? If we use cached logons, will the files sync between workstation and server when the domain controller is present? Which would be a better way to go?

Correct, as long as you are not disallowing Cached Logons via GPO...

"If we use cached logons, will the files sync between workstation and server when the domain controller is present? Which would be a better way to go? "

If you dont use Offline files, most apps will error out, and the behaviour of the PC will be horrible, with matching performance. It will constantly try to enumerate/locate the missing shell folders, if the local copies arent cached as Offline.

Just to clarify... You mention Roaming Profiles....

Are you sure you arent talking about Folder Redirection? Thats what I am assuming... Cause you dont use a roaming profile just for 3 fiolders.....

Yes... of course... We are using folder redirection... sorry, not sure where my head was just now. We redirect the Desktop, My Documents and the application data.

SO, to recap, if we don't disallow profile caching and we enable offline file sync, he will be able to log on to his cached profile when a DC is not present and the files he modifies will sync up with the servers when he reconnects to the domain? Correct?
