Mailbox recovery - Exchange 5.5

I have to recover a mailbox. I have the server running in vmware esxi on a private switch only connected to a pc to run the vSphere Client. I have launched Outlook but can't connect to the mailbox as its asking for username and password. I suspect it's looking for our DC to pass the permissions to connect. I also have tried using exmerge directly on the exch server, but that fails as well. Exmerge see the account that I am trying to recover, but like I said it fails. Anyone have any ideas?
