Mailbox recovery - Exchange 5.5

I have to recover a mailbox. I have the server running in vmware esxi on a private switch only connected to a pc to run the vSphere Client. I have launched Outlook but can't connect to the mailbox as its asking for username and password. I suspect it's looking for our DC to pass the permissions to connect. I also have tried using exmerge directly on the exch server, but that fails as well. Exmerge see the account that I am trying to recover, but like I said it fails. Anyone have any ideas?

OK, one of the errors might be a permissions issue. Is the account you are running the ExMerge with a member of the Local Admins group? If not, add it to Local Admins, log off and on, and rerun Exmerge.

Please post the relevent entry from the "exmerge.log" file. The error will shed light on why exmerge fails. Do you know if the mailbox belongs to someone whose account has been deleted?

Exmerge.log is found in C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin in a standard install.

I can't get the log file off the server as its on a close segment and not on the internet and its a virtual machine that is not recognizing my usb stick that I could copy it too. If I change the IP address of server would it be alright to run it in our production environment with our existing exchange server.

The exchange account is still there. I used vSphere converter to clone the server before the account was deleted.

Thanks for you help dreadman2k, but I restored the mailbox with a third party software that is very good and easy to use "Kernel for Exchange". I suspect you are right with the permissions.
