Small Shop Citrix or alternative recommendations

We are preparing to move from a 2003 terminal server environment using native management tools (e.g., none) to 2008 with a management solution (e.g. Citirx, 2X).
- 500 max concurrent users
- 1000 users total

For Citrix as a management solution, the benefit being pushed is ease of management and improved performance for our >150ms ping offices.

However, budget is limited.  On the table is just using Citrix for our problem offices and native unmanaged TS for the other offices.

This seems a bit awkward, so I'm wondering if the performance increase with Citrix for the problem offices would be worth it.  It would be only about 50 users on Citrix, but we are hopeful management will bite the bullet and approve 100% deployment later.

I'm also of the opinion that our environment is a bit small for Citrix anyway, but I'd still like to simplify management and improve quality for the far remote offices - which is a top concern, so I'd like to hear about any experience with 2x or ericomblaze or other more affordable option.
